2015: What a year we had !
The Leids Kamerkoor was rather busy last year !
- On 6th February we were privileged to perform the supporting programme for the Nederlands Kamerkoor in the Stadsgehoorzaal in Leiden. We sang 5 lovely Renaissance pieces (by heart).
- At the end of May, we took part in two choral activities in the city: during the Pentecost long weekend we sang in the Leiden Hofjesconcerts in the Ars Aemulae “hof”courtyard, in collaboration with the Lignum Clarinet Ensemble. We performed a varied programme of music, that was also a foretaste of the Scandinavian repertoire for the Leids Amateurkunst Festival and our trip to Finland.
- A week before the LAF (Leids Amateurkunst Festival) Finnish composer Pekka Kostiainen gave some masterclasses to a number of Leiden choirs, including ours. His compositions were at the heart of the festival that took place on 30th May in the Stadsgehoorzal. We also sang some of his works.
- The week after we saw Pekka again, when we took part in the Tampere Vocal Music Festival in Finland. Under the artistic direction of Jeroen Spitteler we performed by heart in front of a real jury. The competition was of a high level, and we did rather well, returning home with the 2 silver star award ! During the rest of our stay in Tampere, we sang a few concerts, including one in a hospice.
- During the Open Heritage Days we performed again in the Stadsgehoorzaal, this time under the artistic direction of Peter Scheele, our programme consisting of our Scandinavian repertoire complemented by a couple of Dutch compositions.
- On the 11th December, we gave a Christmas concert ‘Wolcum Yole’, named after the first piece from Benjamin Britten’s ‘Ceremony of Carols’. Heritage Open Days 2015

Open Monumentendag 2015 took place nationwide during the weekend of 12th and 13th September. Thousands of monuments, recognisable by the Open Monumentendag flag, opened their doors free to the general public. The Leids Kamerkoor was invited to sing on the occasion of this event.

Silver award in Tampereen Sävel International Vocal Music Festival !
3rd to 7th June 2015, Tampere, Finland
Al voor de 20ste keer vond dit tweejaarlijkse koren- en vocale ensemblesfestival plaats in Tampere, Finland. Voor het eerst deden wij ook mee! Het was tijd voor onze 5-jaarlijkse buitenlandreis en dit was een mooie gelegenheid.
Het festival was van woensdag 3 juni tot en met maandag 8 juni, bijna iedereen ging mee en het was geweldig! We logeerden in een hotel in het centrum en konden lopend naar de festivallocatie, de Tampere Town Hall. Daar hadden we een repetitieruimte. Omdat onze dirigent niet meekon vanwege het feit dat ze in blijde verwachting is, hadden we een vervanger in de persoon van Jeroen Spitteler, dirigent van o.a. het Utrechts Vocaal Ensemble en Photonen Vocaal Ensemble. Hij heeft zich uitstekend van zijn taak gekweten.
Op donderdagochtend repeteerden we en diezelfde middag zongen we in de ontvangsthal van het plaatselijke hospice. We hadden van de festivalorganisatie een alleraardigste mevrouw, Soile geheten, toegewezen gekregen om ons overal de weg te wijzen en anderszins te begeleiden gedurende het festival. Sommigen gingen naar optredens van de andere deelnemende koren. Al gauw bleek dat het niveau erg hoog lag. Die avond zijn we naar de ‘chorus review’ van de vocale ensembles gegaan. Ook daar zaten hele goede bij en de beste won natuurlijk. Ze kwamen uit verschillende landen, sommigen van ver.
Op vrijdag hadden we weer repetitie. Deze keer met wat meer spanning want ‘s middags vond ons optreden voor de jury plaats! We zongen alles uit het hoofd, net als alle andere koren daar. Het ging goed, we waren heel tevreden. Op zaterdag hadden we vrij, sommigen deden een stadswandeling, anderen lieten zich naar een eilandje varen en gingen daar wandelen. Heel ontspannen allemaal. ‘s Avonds aten we gezamenlijk in een restaurant, daarna bezochten we een prachtig concert van het Latvian Radio Choir in de kathedraal van Tampere. Dat was heel goed en bijzonder!
De volgende ochtend zongen we in een kerkdienst in de buurt, alwaar we niets van de volgorde van de liturgie begrepen omdat alles in het Fins was… Inmiddels wisten we al dat we niet tot de finale, die op zondagmiddag was, waren doorgedrongen. We gingen er natuurlijk wel naar toe en genoten van de optredens van de finalisten. Na afloop zongen we uit volle borst mee met “Finlandia”, één van de belangrijkste nationale liederen van Finland.
Na afloop kregen we het juryrapport onder ogen, waaruit bleek dat we het toch best goed hadden gedaan: Er stonden nl. 2 zilveren kruisjes achter onze naam! Andere koren hadden brons of goud, wij deelden een goede 23ste plaats met nog een aantal koren; en dat op een totaal van 47 deelnemende koren.
De volgende dag stond het busje al weer vroeg voor om de meesten van ons terug naar het vliegveld te brengen. Sommigen knoopten er nog een of meerdere dagen aan vast en bleven in Helsinki.

The Leiden Amateurkunst Festival 2015

Op zaterdag 30 mei deden we mee aan het Leids Amateurkunst Festival 2015, waarvan onze eigen Rozemarijn Kalis artistiek adviseur was.
We zongen in de grote zaal van de Stadsgehoorzaal en deden een aantal stukken van de Finse componist Pekka Kostiainen, die voor deze gelegenheid naar Leiden was gekomen. In de week voorafgaand aan het festival heeft hij masterclasses aan de verschillende deelnemende koren gegeven. Wij deden er ons voordeel mee, want we zouden iets meer dan een week daarna deelnemen aan het Vocal Music Festival in Tampere, Finland (zie hierboven).
We zongen ook nog een aantal andere stukken, waaronder het bijzondere ‘Immortal Bach’ , een bewerking van Knut Nystedt. Dit deden we samen met klarinetensemble Lignum, waarbij meerdere koren zongen of speelden en hun tonen extreem lang aanhielden, waardoor het oorspronkelijke lied bijna een psychedelisch karakter kreeg.

Hofjes Concerts 2015
Monday 25th May 2015, courtyard of Ars Aemula Naturae, Leiden
Op 25 mei, 2e Pinksterdag, hebben we samen met klarinetensemble Lignum meegedaan aan de hofjesconcerten 2015. Net als vorig jaar op de binnenplaats van Ars Aemula Naturae.
Wat niet hetzelfde was, was het weer: het was berekoud, bewolkt en er stond veel wind. Maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken. Ons programma was zeer gevarieerd, van het stille ‘Notre Père’ van Duruflé via ‘Va Pensiero’ uit een van Verdi’s opera’s tot het uitbundige populaire ‘Nedley Medley’, een mix van Nederlandse liedjes uit de jaren 60 en 70 in een bewerking van Geert Bremer.
Het plein stond net als vorig jaar vol met publiek, de reacties waren enthousiast:”Jullie programma is wel heel gevarieerd” en “heel mooi en divers. Ook deed de wind mee en een eigenwijs vogeltje reageerde op jullie zang. Leuk, jullie stralende gezichten bij de liefdesliedjes!”

Three Renaissance Masters with the Nederlands Kamerkoor
Friday 6th February 2015, Stadsgehoorzaal, Leiden
Tallis Scholars founder Peter Phillips visited Leiden with the Nederlands Kamerkoor, to perform a concert described as overwhelming and moving by the NRC newspaper ! At the heart of the Three Renaissance Masters programme was the Missa Et Ecce Terrae Motus by French composer Antoine Brumel, framed by motets by two other Renaissance greats: Josquin des Prez and Orlando di Lasso.
It was a great honour for the Leids Kamerkoor, directed by Rozemarijn Kalis, to sing five lovely Renaissance pieces to open the evening’s programme:

The Leids Kamerkoor, directed by Rozemarijn Kalis, performed a programme of Romantic Music. The title of the concert reflected both the acronym for our choir, LKK, and the theme: “Romanticism”. Laura Bos accompanied us on a number of works on the piano and played some piano interludes. The programme included works by Brahms (including Fünf Gesänge Op. 104), Mendelssohn, Rheinberger and Wolf. Romantic themes that recur in the songs are nature, love and temptation, and menacing spirits of nature. We sang of mountain valleys, nightingales and water fairies. Melancholy and impermanence resounded in songs about graveyards and lost youth.

Open Podium 2014

The Leids Kamerkoor, directed by Rozemarijn Kalis, took part in the Open Podium 2104 on Friday 21st November in the Leidse Volkshuis! An evening of diverse acts, with performers including (amongst others) Sarah Laure, Weltmeister, the Leids Kamerkoor, poet Herman de Tollenaere, Klezmerband Di Krenitzes and cabaret by Ronald Oudman.
Open Monuments Day 2014
Saturday 13th September 2014, Pieterskerk, Leiden
Open Monuments Day 2014 took place across the Netherlands on 13th and 14th September. Thousands of national monuments, recognisable by the Open Monuments Day flag, threw open their doors for free to the general public. On the occasion of this event, the Leids Kamerkoor was invited to sing in the Pieterskerk in Leiden.
The Leids Kamerkoor, directed by Rozemarijn Kalis, journeyed to the great outdoors. In the company of Mendelssohn we serenaded through mountains and valleys, forests and fields. Inspired by Grieg and Hugo Alfvén, we took a deep breath of Scandinavian spring air… and for afters, we danced through Hungary.

“Leids Kamerkoor: Hats Off!”
On Saturday 21st June and Sunday 22nd June the Leids Kamerkoor put on 2 special concerts in the Leiden Lokhorstkerk, in collaboration with Trio C Tot de Derde (inspired by klezmer-, balkan- and Gypsy music), accompanied by David Dekker on the piano.
Music ranged from cheery folksongs to moody lovesongs, and on Sunday afternoon a special children’s performance was given.

On Monday 9th June, second day of Pentecost, we performed 2 short concerts in the courtyard of Ars Aemulae, as part of the Leiden Hofjes Concert festival.
We did this in collaboration with “Duo C Kwadraat”, 2 members of ”Trio C tot de Derde” who also joined us in our concert on 21st-22nd June. They played fantastic accordeon and violin, and accompanied a couple of our songs. They brought a cheerful note and fun to the concert, though also contributing a heartrenching end to a marriage song. Voices and instruments happily complemented each other.
The “hall” was nice and full on both occasions. We came on singing, between two new banners with our name and logo. Our chairman introduced our forthcoming summer concerts and flyers were distributed. This provided a good warm up for our summer concerts, though on a brilliant summer’s day that required cooling down. We sang a number of songs by heart, as a result of which obtained some fine photos. In the future we aim to sing more music by heart, thereby keep up our cheerful appearances…

On Good Friday we sang the Vesper Service at the Lokhortskerk. Rozemarijn had put together a programme of beautiful music for the Passion, in close consultation with the pastor. The music alternated with readings, and seamlessly complemented each other. It was a lovely service, during which space was made for a moment of silence for those who had lost a loved one. Reactions afterwards were also very positive.
(Afterwards, most of the choir trotted off to Anton’s house-warming party, stopping off on the way for goodies at the local store).

Throughout the winter this congregation holds a special monthly Evensong service, in which choirs often can be seen and heard. The Leids Kamerkoor has had the honour to be heard on a number of occasions.
We were welcomed by dhr. Hans van de Linden, the pastor, and sang pieces in the spirit of Lent. We sang from our repertoire in 3 sections, intermezzo’d by two organ solos played by Hans Jansen. Everything went smoothly, and the church congregation seemed to appreciate it too. Since the “Our Father” was scheduled for the end of the programme, we saved our sung version “Notre Père” for later in the service.
The pastor was also cantor, and fulfilled this role admirably. We received heartfelt thanks and returned satisfied to our homes.
Lakenhal Gerrit Dou Exhibition (2014)
In 2014 the Leiden Lakenhal Museum organised an exhibition of paintings by Gerrit Dou (1613-1675), one of the most celebrated painters of the Golden Age. The Lakenhal Museum commemorated his birth 400 years ago in Leiden with an exhibition entitled “Gerrit Dou – The Leiden Collection from New York”. For the first time, all of Dou’s paintings from the Leiden Collection in New York are being exhibited, and notably in Leiden, his city of origin.
On the occasion of this world-premier, the Leids Kamerkoor was invited to sing at the exclusive opening event on 8th March 2014.

Walk-in Concert Pieterskerk (2014)
On the 8th of March 2014, the Pieterskerk organised a walk-in concert with the Leids Kamerkoor.

Anniversary Concert: Fabelachtig (2013)
The Leids Kamerkoor is 25 years old and celebrated with a special concert: a staged production at the Theater Ins Blau, Leiden on Saturday 7th and 14th December 2013.
In December 2013 the Leids Kamerkoor put on an exclusive production, titled “Fabelachtig”, with works by Gabriel Fauré, Bob Chilcott and Ola Gjeilo, with the high point being Menotti’s “The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore”. The production was a remarkable combination of singing, acting, projection and instrumental ensemble which through sculpture and projection brought these chimera to life.

Surprising Winkelweekend in Leiden (2013)
On 12th and 13th December 2013, a number of Leiden’s choirs served up Christmas Carols in the shopping neighbourhoods of Leiden. The Leids Kamerkoor joined in, performing 4-part christmas carols, both known and less known, at two locations in the historic city centre.
Leiden Amateur Arts Festival Leiden (2013)
On Saturday 29th June 2013, a variety of Leiden’s choirs joined voices for the third Leiden Amateur Arts Festival. Participating choirs also performed a short selection of their own work. The grand finale consisted of a piece by young Leiden musician Leonard Evers (1985) sung by all choirs together. The Leids Kamerkoor was happy to participate in this festival once again.
Surprising Winkelweekend in Leiden (2012)
Op 22 en 23 december 2012 verzorgden diverse Leidse koren (kerst)muziek op allerlei plaatsen in winkelgebieden van Leiden. Het Leids Kamerkoor bracht op zondag 23 december op twee locaties in de binnenstad meerstemmige, bekende en onbekende kerstmuziek ten gehore.

Op iedere vierde zondagavond van de maand (behalve in de zomermaanden) vindt er in de Dorpskerk van Kethel een ’Avondmuziek’ plaats waarin de vocale kerkmuziek een centrale plaats inneemt. Het Leids Kamerkoor is een van de koren die hier van tijd tot tijd zijn medewerking aan verleent.
De Avondmuziek begint om 19.00 uur en is rond 20.00 uur afgelopen.
Toegang vrij; er is wel een collecte bij de uitgang.

Spring Concert 2011
Het LKK bracht een feestelijk programma met een spectrum van vroege tot twintigste eeuwse muziek. Hoogtepunten waren naast cantate nummer 6 van Bach het romantische Abendlied van Rheinberger en de dubbelkorige mis van Frank Martin. Dit monumentale werk was voor het LKK een ware belevenis, waarvoor het koor werd uitgebreid tot een ensemble van 32 zangers.
